Why Visit The Island Of Delos And All The Details

Island Of Delos

The island of Delos is a small uninhabited isle a few miles off the west coast of Mykonos. In the ancient times it was considered the birthplace of the god Apollo and his twin, goddess Artemis therefore the entire island was deemed sacred. Now, Delos is an UNESCO World Heritage Monument, open to the public as an archaeological site with guided tours that let you in on all the details of everyday life on Delos some 4000 years ago.

The ruins of the ancient citadel of Delos are remarkably well preserved, and some of the most significant in the entire Mediterranean. You will have the chance to admire a city where over 25.000 people lived, a city that provided running water and indoor bathrooms, luxurious mansions with artfully intricate mosaics and glorious temples. Moreover, in the Archaeological Museum of Delos you will get to admire an impressive collection of sculptures, figurines, pottery and other artifacts from as far back as the 7th century BC.

Visiting the island of Delos is a unique experience; an entire island is a museum, seeming frozen in time. Walk where ancient Greeks and Romans walked, down the street with the iconic lion statues, the symbol of Delos, explore the life in a civilization long lost, but not at all forgotten. Delos is the one place that should not be missed out from your sightseeing plans when vacationing in Mykonos; no matter how many days you’re staying, make sure you dedicate a morning to a trip to Delos island.

There are daily boat trips to Delos starting from the old port of Mykonos. These trips last until early in the afternoon as there is no accommodation whatsoever on Delos. There is one café by the museum of Delos for water, beverages and snacks.
